Connect LocoGPS to Home Assistant
With Home Assistant you connect your tracker to your smart home. For example, your Echo speakers can announce when your dog leaves home or comes back, or remind you to charge the tracker before the battery runs out.
What you need
- Home Assistant 2026.3 or later
- HACS, the community store for Home Assistant
- the email address and password of your LocoGPS account
Install the integration
- In Home Assistant, open HACS, tap the menu in the top right and select Custom repositories.
- Enter
https://github.com/LocoGPS/home-assistant, select Integration as the type and confirm. - Search HACS for LocoGPS, download the integration and restart Home Assistant.
- Open Settings > Devices & services, tap Add integration and search for LocoGPS.
- Log in with your LocoGPS account.
After that, each tracker in your account appears as its own device. Home Assistant does not store your password. It gets its own access key instead. This key renews itself and is deleted when you remove the integration.
What Home Assistant shows
- your tracker's location on the map
- for each geofence of your tracker, whether it is Inside or Outside
- the battery in percent and whether the tracker is charging right now
- whether the tracker is online and when it last reported
- for the LocoGPS LV2, also whether it is currently in WLAN power saving mode
Positions and geofences arrive live, as fast as in the app.
Announcement when leaving and arriving
For announcements on Echo speakers you also need the Alexa Media Player integration from HACS. Then create a new automation in Home Assistant, switch to the YAML view through the menu and paste this text. Replace edda with the name of your tracker, zuhause with the name of your geofence and media_player.echo_kueche with your Echo.
alias: Edda has left home
triggers:
- trigger: state
entity_id: binary_sensor.edda_geofence_zuhause
from: "on"
to: "off"
actions:
- action: notify.alexa_media
data:
target: media_player.echo_kueche
message: Edda has left home.
data:
type: announceFor the arrival you create a second automation, swap "on" and "off" and change the text.
Charging reminder
This automation lets you know as soon as the battery drops below 20 percent.
alias: Charge Edda's tracker
triggers:
- trigger: numeric_state
entity_id: sensor.edda_battery
below: 20
actions:
- action: notify.alexa_media
data:
target: media_player.echo_kueche
message: The battery of Edda's tracker is almost empty, please charge it.
data:
type: announceGood to know
For automations around your home, use the geofence and not the Home Assistant zone. LocoGPS calculates the geofence directly, and it switches exactly when the notification arrives in the app.
The integration only displays values. You still change settings such as the tracking interval or live tracking in the app.
